What is the GED®?

GED® is the General Educational Development test. The GED® is designed for adults over the age of 16 who haven’t earned a high school diploma and aren’t currently enrolled in high school.

The GED®tests cover four academic areas that evaluate your skills & knowledge. Students need a minimum score of 145 in order to pass each individual test. 

Academic areas include:

  • Mathematics
  • Reasoning through Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies

What is the HiSET® exam?

The HiSET® exam gives out-of-school youth and adults the best opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge and earn a state-issued high school equivalency (HSE) credential.

The HiSET® tests cover five academic areas. Each subject tests your skills and knowledge. Students need to score a minimum 8 out of 20 on each subtest, receive a 2 out of 6 on the essay,and have a combined score of 45 out of 100 to complete the HiSET® & obtain the HSE credential.

  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Writing

How do I prepare for HSE testing?

Fayetteville Technical Community College offers HSE preparation classes free of charge.

Once a student demonstrates readiness to take one or more parts of the GED®/HiSET® tests, he/she is required to pay a fee for the test. To register for the Official GED®Test students will go online to GED.com or for HiSET® visit the HiSET© website.

Students with a disability can request accommodations during registration online. A personal account will be created to register, schedule & pay for the tests.

Students will come to FTCC’s Fayetteville campus to take the computer-based GED® or paper/computer-based HiSET® test in the Continuing Education Center, Room 101.

High School Equivalency (HSE)

The High School Equivalency program allows you to earn your high school equivalency credential by completing & passing either the GED® or HiSET® exams.
